Underfloor heating and tiles: what you need to know
Tiles and underfloor heating are a perfect match. We cover compatible tile types, system choices, and common installation questions.
Tiles and underfloor heating are a natural pairing. Porcelain and ceramic are excellent thermal conductors, meaning heat transfers quickly and efficiently through the tile to warm the room.
There are two main types of underfloor heating: electric mat systems and water (hydronic) systems. Electric mats are thinner, easier to install, and ideal for retrofitting into bathrooms and kitchens. Water systems are more efficient for heating larger areas and whole-house installations but require more complex installation.
Almost all porcelain and ceramic tiles are compatible with underfloor heating. Natural stone is also suitable, though it tends to be thicker, so the system may take slightly longer to warm up. The key is to use a flexible adhesive that can accommodate the expansion and contraction caused by temperature changes.
We stock electric underfloor heating systems in our showrooms, including mats, thermostats, and insulation boards. Our team can help you choose the right system for your room size and floor type.
A common concern is running cost. Electric underfloor heating in a typical bathroom costs just a few pence per day to run, especially with a programmable thermostat that heats the room only when you need it.
One tip: if you are installing underfloor heating, make sure the substrate is well insulated beneath the heating element. This ensures the heat goes up into the room rather than down into the subfloor, making the system more efficient and responsive.
